The Wells of Memory

Inspired by the ancient tanneries of Fez, this work does not portray a place, but the invisible memory carried by it.

For centuries, the stone dyeing wells of Fez have held layers of color, craftsmanship, ritual, and time. Every basin has absorbed countless transformations, becoming a silent witness to generations of hands, traditions, and lives.

In this painting, the circular forms echo those historic wells—not as architecture, but as vessels of collective memory. The sculptural brushstrokes emerge from the surface like independent forms, suggesting human presences without defining them. They exist somewhere between gesture and figure, inviting the viewer to complete the narrative.

Each brushstroke is individually sculpted in polymer before being assembled onto the canvas, transforming the painting into a layered relief where light becomes part of the composition. The textured surface, fragments of gold leaf, and earth-toned palette reference the passage of time rather than the depiction of a landscape.

The Wells of Memory explores how places preserve more than history—they preserve energy, ritual, and the traces of those who came before us. It is an abstract meditation on transformation, remembrance, and the invisible connections that continue to flow through generations.
